The $875 million contract over 12 years went to a Boston startup called Air Space Intelligence. SMART will advise controllers on routing at DCA, Dulles, and BWI. This is the same airspace where the American Airlines/Black Hawk collision killed 67 people in January 2025. The FAA says the tool won't directly control planes but will generate alternative routes when traffic backs up. The FAA has not disclosed whether SMART uses deterministic models or generative AI. No success metrics have been published. My Take I'm not against AI in aviation. Predictive tools for weather and traffic flow have existed for years and they work well because they're deterministic. Same input, same output, every time. The FAA won't say whether SMART works that way or whether it can give you a different answer to the same question depending on when you ask it. For $875 million over 12 years to a startup, the public deserves an answer to that before it goes live. SMART won't directly control planes. It will generate alternative routes when traffic backs up. But controllers will see those recommendations on their screens and act on them under pressure in the same corridor where 67 people died 20 months ago. If the recommendation is wrong and a controller follows it, "the AI was only advisory" isn't going to hold up. The FAA hasn't published a single metric for how they'll measure whether this works.
