In 2024, Character AI said it was answering 20,000 messages a second, around a fifth of what Google Search handled. In September 2025, Disney’s lawyers ordered it to pull every Disney character off the app. Last month, ex-CEO Karandeep Anand left to become Disney’s CTO, and some of his staff went with him. On Monday, Character AI filed for bankruptcy. Now, Disney is bidding $20M to license parts of Character AI’s tech, and those ex-employees will help keep the app running during the sale.
